社区的名称与南宋时的一段地方往事有关：国子监祭酒刘政回到家乡，修整水利、开辟田地，他所住的片区原被称作刘家庄。莆田话里“刘”近似“楼”、“家”近似“下”，于是刘家被讹传为楼下。[1]

2021年3月，社区被确定为「莆田市第十五届市级文明村镇（社区）」；2024年1月，被命名为「2023年福建省卫生社区」。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

1956年6月，社区隶属涵江镇人民居委会。曾有约一年半时间，这里与保尾等地同属涵西街。1958年上半年，楼下高级社被划出，归另一个社管理。2002年起属涵西街道。[2]

名胜古迹[edit]

卢埕杨氏民居建于清中期，占地3500平方米，由三座宅院并排组成，左侧为正堂，其余两座为卷堂，格局为二进合院。民居在莆田市的市级文物名录之内。[3]
