前街社区的名称来自所在的前街铺，这一带是旧时涵江二十四铺中的一铺。[1]

2021年11月，社区被福建省爱卫办命名为「2021年福建省卫生社区」。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

前街社区设立于宋代，属唐安乡延寿里；明清两代隶属莆田县二区延寿里。文革时期一度改称前锋街，1980年恢复原名前街。1985年涵江建区后设前街居委会，1986年起属涵西街道前街居委会。[2]

名胜古迹[edit]

1929年，中共莆田地下党员为建立党的地下交通站，在涵江开设文墨斋书店，店内经营文具，兼售革命书刊，还负责秘密转递党团的信件。这处旧址即文墨斋书店交通站遗址，在社区内的原远东巷。[3]
