孝义社区的名称取自一句家训，意思是以孝为百善之先，并且看重义。[1]

2021年3月，社区被确定为「莆田市第十五届市级文明村镇（社区）」；同年11月，又被福建省爱卫办命名为「2021年福建省卫生社区」。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

民国保甲编制时，此地称孝义保。新中国成立后改称孝义街，文革期间又叫向阳街。20世纪80年代初，原址拆建，此后改作涵江钟表社的场地。1985年涵江建区后设立孝义居委会，1986年起称涵西街道孝义社区。[2]
