历史沿革[edit]
宋元时期，这一带属唐安乡延寿里；明清时期则属莆田县二区延寿里。[1]
1949年以后，这一带的隶属关系多次变动，先后划入过涵江公社、涵江镇与涵江区，并曾归莆田县第二区。[2]
1984年6月，涵江成为莆田市的辖区，当时下设涵江乡与涵江镇。1993年1月，涵江区进行撤乡建镇并设立街道办事处，涵西街道办事处随之成立。[4]
地理环境[edit]
街道北面与梧塘镇接壤，西侧是荔城区的拱辰街道，南面连着白塘镇，东面则与涵东街道、三江口镇为邻。福厦公路经过辖区。[2][3]
辖区面积，百度百科记为3.4平方千米，博雅地名网记为3平方千米，两者都没有注明年份。[2][3]
人口民族[edit]
2011年末，街道总人口为2.31万人。[2]
博雅地名网另外载有约5.54万人、2.26万人（7949户）两个数字，既未注明年份，也未说明统计口径，本条不采用。[1][3]
名胜古迹[edit]
1948年秋，中共闽中地委在涵江设立地下联络站，站址设在陈长城家中。联络站接待并掩护革命同志，还把进步青年送往大洋根据地，并为闽中的游击武装搜集敌情。[5]
1944年初，中共闽中特委为缓解经费困难，选定保尾街上的涵江交通银行作为筹款行动的目标。[5]
