灵川镇隶属于福建省莆田市城厢区，位于湄洲湾西北岸，背靠壶公山南麓，面朝海湾。灵川里之名宋代已见，1984年改设灵川乡，1988年改设镇，2002年由莆田县划归城厢区，镇政府驻何寨社区。[1][2][5]

镇内的高地天后宫在青山村，为莆田市第五批市级文物保护单位，主祀妈祖。[6]

历史沿革[edit]

宋、元时期此地属莆田县永嘉乡灵川里，明、清属莆田县五区灵川里。民国时期分属华亭、岩头、笏石等区，部分地方曾属四区、霞皋区与灵川乡。[3]

1958年10月改设灵川人民公社。1984年，此地改设灵川乡；1988年，改设灵川镇，仍归莆田县。1999年11月，镇域部分区域析出，设立东海镇。[1][3]

2002年2月，灵川镇划归莆田市城厢区管辖。1997年时全镇辖28个村（居）委会。[2][3]

地理环境[edit]

镇域依湄洲湾西北岸展开，北倚壶公山南麓的山地，南临海湾，气候属亚热带海洋性。[2][1]

据博雅地名网所记，壶公山的分支自东向西横贯全镇，大小山峰约二十座，最高处海拔639.5米，山脉沿海岸蜿蜒，全长约17公里。[4]

地名由来据博雅地名网的记述，灵川里之名见于宋代，「灵川」一名民间另有传说，称与祖先读《陋室铭》后产生的灵感有关。[4]

名胜古迹[edit]

高地天后宫位于青山村的高地自然村，又称灵慈祖庙、鳌头宫。宫庙最早建于宋代，元末曾遭损毁，此后于清咸丰二年（1852）得到重建，供奉妈祖，已被定为莆田市第五批市级文物保护单位。[6]

青龙书社在桂山村的赤土自然村，书社创建于唐昭宗年间，供奉肇顺圣候，明嘉靖四十二年被倭寇烧毁。[7]

荣誉[edit]

福建省爱卫办于2020年12月授予灵川镇「福建省卫生乡镇」称号。2021年3月，镇内获评「莆田市第十五届市级文明村镇（社区）」。[4]
