外东坪村位于常太镇内，与溪南、霞山、汀洋等村相接。[1]

村子坐落在一座高山的东侧，地势平坦，村名由此得来。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

1941年前后至1949年，此地属莆田县第八区南坑乡，称东坪保。1952年至1955年间，它先后归第十四区管辖，仍设南坑乡；1956年划入常太高级社。1958年归常太人民公社，设生产大队，名外东坪；1965年改为大队。1984年12月设外东坪村委会，隶属常太乡；1992年10月归莆田县常太镇，2002年以后属城厢区常太镇。[1]

荣誉[edit]

2021年11月，村子获福建省爱卫办命名为「2021年福建省卫生村」。[1]
