地名由来[edit]
早先此地有林姓村民聚居，称作下林，后来谐音改写为霞林。[1]
建置沿革[edit]
宋代此地的水亭村位于沥浔塘边，旧时霞林一带隶属嘉禾里龙宫山兴隆社。[3]
建国后，此地先后归阔口乡、五里乡（乡政府设筱塘）和沟东乡（乡政府设棠坡），称霞林村。1958年9月，它归沟东公社霞林大队；此后又为城郊公社霞林大队，1984年改为城郊乡霞林村，之后归城南乡霞林村。[3]
2002年，城南乡分设为几个政府驻地，霞林村改为霞林社区居民委员会。[3]
名胜古迹[edit]
施水亭井位于社区内，为莆田市级文物保护单位。唐代黄妙应禅师指地凿此井，供过路人取水，又在旁建亭让行人歇息。井至今保存完好，井旁锦亭寺中仍留有两对瓜棱形的连木石柱础。[4]
荣誉[edit]
2024年1月，社区被命名为「2023年福建省卫生社区」。2021年2月，社区入选「福建省2018-2020年度省级文明村镇社区」名单。[1]
