历史沿革[edit]
集美原为渔村。同安境内最大的河流东西溪在石浔一带入海，下游海域称浔江，其西岸延伸到此处便到了尽头，故旧称尽尾。明代天启年间，进士陈文瑞认为“浔尾”之名不雅，便取闽南话白读的谐音，改雅称为“集美”。[3]
1953年11月，集美乡改称集美镇。[1]1997年时的集美镇面积2.9平方千米，人口2.2万，下辖11个居委会。[3]
地理环境[edit]
街道面积约4.6平方千米。北面与侨英街道相邻，东面临浔江港湾，西面傍杏林湾，南面以厦门大桥及高集海堤与厦门岛相连。[1]街道办事处驻石鼓路82号。[3]
人口民族[edit]
截至2019年末，街道户籍人口为28278人。[1]
名胜古迹[edit]
集美学村是陈嘉庚自1913年起创办的各类学校及文化机构的总称，由学前教育到研究生教育的校舍与馆所都在其中。[4][5]2006年，「集美学村和厦门大学早期建筑」被国务院列为第六批全国重点文物保护单位。[5]
鳌园位于集美学村东南的海滨，原为南浔江中的一座小岛，形似海龟，因而得名。1950年陈嘉庚为纪念集美解放，将这一小岛填海扩展，建成鳌园。[6][7]1988年，园内的陈嘉庚墓被列为全国重点文物保护单位。[7]鳌园景区另有嘉庚公园，以及归来堂、归来园、陈嘉庚纪念馆与陈嘉庚先生故居等。[6][10]
陈嘉庚先生故居位于嘉庚路149号，始建于1918年，陈嘉庚与其弟陈敬贤回国后在此办公、起居。1988年，故居被列为厦门市市级文物保护单位。[8][9]
文化[edit]
街道先后获得「第一批福建省侨乡文化名镇名村」的认定（2019年3月），并于2021年2月上榜「福建省2018-2020年度省级文明村镇社区」名单。[3]
著名人物[edit]
博雅地名网列出的街道相关人物有爱国华侨领袖陈嘉庚（1874～1961），中国科学院院士卓仁禧（1931～2019）和卢嘉锡（1915～2001），以及陈六使（1897～1972）。[3]
