莲前街道在厦门岛东部，隶属思明区，位于洪济山北麓，东面隔海与小金门岛相望[5]。它的名字来自辖内两条道路，即莲前东路与莲前西路，二者穿过莲坂与前埔一带[1]。街道办事处于1987年7月组建，2003年6月才从开元区改属思明区[4][5]。
历史沿革[edit]
清末这一带分属嘉禾里的二十一都和二十二都，村社按福相保、古村保、何岭保等保编组；此后1935年并入禾山特种区，两年后又归厦门市禾山区管辖[3]。
1958年10月，这里归郊区前线公社统辖，分别属于何厝、前埔、莲坂三个大队；其中莲坂大队后来分出西林，前埔则在1969年分出洪文[3]。
1987年7月，禾山乡的五个村委会（何厝、前埔、洪文、西林、莲坂）和梧村街道下属的几个居委会，合并组成莲前街道办事处[3][4]。
此后辖区多次拆并：1989年西林村析出龙山桥居委会；2000年6月，16个居委会划入新设的嘉莲街道；2001年4月，前埔、西林、洪文等村陆续分出莲薇、前埔北、金鸡亭、莲怡、莲顺、莲云、莲丰、瑞景、侨福等社区；2003年6月，多数村委会改为社区；2005年，展城新村设立莲成社区；2008年以后又增设数个社区，街道下辖23个社区[3]。
地理环境[edit]
街道的南边靠着云顶岩，西南至西面以东坪山公园为界，与梧村、滨海两街道接壤，北面则是湖边水库与虎仔山[4]。
其最高处云顶岩是洪济山的主峰，高339.6米，在厦门岛内居首[6]。
街道面积有两种记载：博雅地名网作22.3平方千米，百度百科作25.61平方千米，两者均未注明年份[1][2][4]。
人口民族[edit]
快懂百科载明，街道常住人口在2020年第七次全国人口普查中为287704人；百度百科则记户籍人口，截至2019年末为158462人[4][5]。
名胜古迹[edit]
云顶岩摩崖石刻分布在云顶岩寺旁，有三十余处，年代上起明代、下至民国；「天际」石刻刻于明洪武十四年（1381年），据百度百科是岛内迄今所见最早的带纪年石刻[1][6]。
1998年6月，这组石刻经公布成为厦门市级文物保护单位[6]。
「八·二三」炮战纪念址在何厝村东南的海边，是一幢坐南朝北的砖混三层楼房，系印尼华侨何水于民国二十二年（1933年）所建；博雅地名网将其列为市级文物，年代标为1958年[1]。
辖内的忠仑公园以东芳山为主体，园内林木茂密，有相思林、龙眼林等[1][7]。
文化[edit]
1958年「八·二三」炮战期间，这里涌现出「英雄小八路」「前沿十姐妹」等事迹，人们称此地为她们的故乡；中国少年先锋队队歌也诞生于此[2][5]。
