下祝乡隶属福州市闽清县，地处县境东北部的山区，乡政府所在地为下祝村。[1][2]

乡名来自当地的祝姓聚居。古时祝氏兄弟分家，哥哥住在上村，弟弟住在下村；因祝氏祖祠设在下村，此地便称「下祝」，建乡后沿用至今。[2]

2023年12月，省绿化委员会与省林业局作出决定，下祝乡列入2023年度「福建省森林乡镇」名单。[4]

2020年第七次全国人口普查时，全乡乡村人口为10712人；2019年末户籍人口为20052人。[5][1]

历史沿革[edit]

此地在宋代归奉政乡安仁里管辖，元代编入十九都，清代划为怀德乡的一部分。民国时设杉村乡，最初管着10个保。[3]

新中国成立后，这里在1950年归第二区，分成5个乡；经过1952至1954年的调整变为6个乡。1955年后改隶东桥区，原有各乡又归并为三个，即杉村、洋头和前洋。[3]

1958年，这一带改建为火箭人民公社；次年更名东桥公社；1961年另立下祝公社。1973年与1977年先后调整，所辖大队从15个增至22个。1984年7月设立乡政府，称下祝乡。[1][3]

地理环境[edit]

乡境东北面与闽侯县廷坪乡接界；洋里乡在其东南，东桥镇在其西南，古田县大桥镇则位于西北。两种资料对全乡面积的记载不同：百度百科为86.98平方千米，博雅地名网为约80.1平方千米，二者均未注明统计年份。[1][2]

乡境为山区，气候属中亚热带季风气候。115县道穿过乡政府所在的下祝村。[1][7]

经济[edit]

农业以水稻和红薯为主，茶叶和竹木也是本乡的主要出产。[2]

名胜古迹[edit]

后峰村垱狮岩壁上刻有「留云」二字，据所载为朱熹题刻，字为横排阴刻，宽40厘米、高30厘米，末端署有小字「晦翁书」，题写时间不明。该刻列入1998年公布的第五批文物保护单位名单。[6]
