村名取自当地的土质与道路：此处土多为黄壤，早年迁来的居民齐心开出一条沿山岭的小路，路况坎坷，路面尽是黄土，因而得名“黄土岭”。[1]

历史沿革[edit]

宋代属奉政乡安仁里，元代属二十都的若干村落，明代与二十一都等六个都合编为一个图，清代属怀德乡，民国时属下洋乡新南保。[2]

新中国成立后，此地先归第二区新桥乡（1950至1954年），1955至1957年改隶东桥区的新桥乡。1959年与1960年分别归火箭公社和东桥公社的新桥大队。1961年另设黄土岭大队，1963年一度分为三个大队，1964年并回一个。1984年东桥乡政府设立后，黄土岭成为其属下的村民委员会。[2]

2021年12月，村子获得「2021年度福建省森林村庄」称号。[1]
