吉山村位于青口镇，紧邻国道，距福州市区约38公里。全村包括吉山、四斗楼、西湖山、边木臭四个自然村，其中吉山自然村位于平原区。[1]

村名来自一则传说：古时一对夫妇南下途经此地，妻子在一座小山包上早产生子，母子平安，父亲认为这里是吉祥宝地，村名因此得来。[1]

1989年9月，吉山村由宏屿大队分出，设立吉山村村民委员会。[1]
