据博雅地名网所载，村子四周有河流和田地，村名由此而来。[1]
1976年分村后为生产大队，1986年改称江田村委会，此后延续至今。[1]

近年来，村中逐步形成江田环岛民营工业集中区，另有20家经编厂家。[1]

灵峰寺摩崖石刻位于本村灵峰山，为区级文物保护单位，列入年份为1986年。[2]
荣誉[edit]
2020年12月，本村列入「一村一品」示范村名单（蔬菜），年度为2020年；2023年11月，本村为福州市中级版「绿盈乡村」，认定年度为2023年。[1]
