乾元村位于螺洲镇西北约三公里处，北靠福厦路。1950年设立乾元村，1984年改设村民委员会。[1]

村名“乾元”由先到此地定居的人所取，取天道伊始、春季万物始生之意。[1]
村史上，村名数度更迭：1958年称乾元大队，“文革”时期叫前进大队，1981年复回原名。[1]

村境临螺洲河，该河在乾元一带与濂浦河相通。[2]
