历史沿革[edit]
鼓西街道的名称取自辖区大部分位于古建筑鼓楼以西的位置。[5] 西汉时此地属冶县，汉武帝灭闽越国后成为东部侯官的驻地，东汉时设立侯官县于此。[1]
1950年9月，福州废除保甲制度，设立基层政权时，成立鼓西居委会。[5] 1955年改称鼓西街道办事处，1960年，办事处被改成人民公社；至1963年4月，名称又改回街道办事处。到1968年，名称改为「红湖街道革命委员会」；1978年，又恢复为「鼓西街道办事处」。[5]
1978年，鼓西街道复设，增设后县、湖滨两个居民委员会。截至2020年6月，街道下辖六个社区。[1]

区政府网的行政区划表将街道面积列为1.84平方千米，街道简介则记为1.837平方千米。[3][4]
街道内的主要道路有鼓西路、湖滨路、达明路与元帅路等。[5]

文化[edit]
2000年，街道被授予「福建省第二批科技示范街道」称号。[6]
2021年2月，街道在「福建省2018-2020年度省级文明村镇社区」名单中入选。[5]
名胜古迹[edit]
福州西湖公园位于湖滨路71号，占地约42.51公顷，2021年1月被评为「国家3A级旅游景区」。[7][3]
鼓楼前公园在鼓屏路与鼓西路交叉口的西北角，以唐代鼓楼遗址为核心，2009年遗址公园建成开放。该遗址上的鼓楼始建于唐元和十年（815年），北宋时加设铜壶滴漏报时装置，1952年残楼被拆，2001年的考古工作发现了汉至清代的七层文化堆积。[8]
福建博物院位于湖头街96号，前身是1933年10月创立的「福建省立科学馆」，2002年新馆落成后更名为福建博物院。[9]
隆武帝行宫遗址位于鼓西路137至139号通湖新村内，现仅存遗址、破屋与一道残墙。博雅地名网记述了1645年（弘光元年）六月南京失守、福王殉难后，明朝大臣在福州拥戴唐王的经过。[5]
